The Bookmark Rule
Use the nearest piece of paper.
A bookmark should not be so beautiful that losing it becomes another concern. Receipts, ticket stubs, index cards, and folded scraps all perform the job.
The accidental bookmark also preserves a small connection between the book and the circumstances in which it was read. Finding one later can be more evocative than any annotation.
