Subtitles On

I leave subtitles on for almost everything. They help with dense sound mixes, but the more interesting benefit is attention. A line that might pass as texture becomes visible as writing.

The cost is obvious: eyes are pulled toward the bottom of the frame. For visually precise films I sometimes turn them off. Most of the time, seeing the sentence improves the experience more than it interrupts the image.
